delirium of the night
A project representing the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease
(this was my portfolio for college)
The disease starts out feeling like a hazy daydream. Patients start to lose details of their memories and might forget things day-to-day, but they can still recall the important things.
These photos show the fuzziness they feel in their brains. The photos on the right side exhibit their altered perception of time while still staying calm. At this point, the light of their old life fades, and they are left with the darkness that comes with dementia.
The next progression is a feeling of isolation and loneliness as the patient realizes something is not right, but there is nothing they can do about it. While things are still familiar, they now come with a tinge of fear that was not there before.
This stage comes with increased anxiety and confusion. They may also start to wander, unsure of where they are going.
At this stage, time starts to really blend together and get more confusing. The brain starts processing events differently, from the bending of time to a more chaotic view that scares them more. The confusion and chaos continues to worsen until the patient starts to lose the ability to distinguish reality from dreams.
In the end stages, the patient starts to slip away into their own confusion and horror, getting lost inside themselves. They try to hold on to what pieces of themselves they have left, but ultimately they lose the battle within their mind and fade away forever.
